2010 Fellowships Announced

A first-round Community Leadership Project grantee, the Rockwood Leadership Institute announced its 2010 Fellowships for California Leaders of Color. See a list of the 2010 Fellows here. Urban Institute’s Study on Diversity Now Available

December 2009

The Urban Institute has released a study on the diversity of California’s nonprofit sector. This study was funded by the Packard, Irvine, and Hewlett foundations, along with The California Endowment. You can find both the Executive Summary and the full report on the Urban Institute’s website.

The Community Leadership Project is
Reviewing Proposals for the Second Round
of Grants to Intermediaries

With the deadline for submissions now passed, the three funders of the Community Leadership Project are reviewing proposals from a second round of organizations that have expressed an interest in distributing grants, or providing technical assistance or leadership programs to strengthen nonprofit groups that are led by or serve people of color and low-income communities. Target organizations work in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the Central Coast, or the San Joaquin Valley. An Update on the Community Leadership Project from the David and Lucile Packard, James Irvine, and William and Flora Hewlett Foundations

We announced in April an $8 million commitment over three years to launch the Community Leadership Project, an effort by the Packard, Irvine and Hewlett foundations to strengthen grassroots organizations that are led by or serve low-income people and communities of color in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, Central Coast and San Joaquin Valley. In June, we announced a first round of funding totaling $5.7 million to nine intermediary organizations that will distribute grants, or provide technical assistance or leadership programs, to organizations serving the targeted communities. The Community Leadership Project, a creation of three of the Bay Area's largest private foundations, announced today its first round of grants to intermediary organizations that will work to strengthen nonprofit organizations that are led by or serve people of color and low-income communities in California. Introducing the Community Leadership Project

Dear Friends,

As one of the most diverse states in the nation, California's future depends significantly on the success of the communities of color that together comprise a majority of its population. The current economic hardships make it even more urgent to strengthen the nonprofit organizations that serve these communities.

To that end, the Packard, Irvine, and Hewlett foundations plan to commit $8 million over the coming three years for a new project to strengthen grassroots organizations that are led by or serve people and communities of color. READ MORE »
